Wolverhampton Music Service is preparing for the premiere of a new film showcasing how children and young people continued to make music throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Music Plays On – A Story of Performance During Lockdown showcases some of the digital performances that were achieved by children, young people and teachers who share their widely varying experiences through music and the spoken word.

Sarah Tulley, Assistant Head of Wolverhampton Music Service, said: “Wolverhampton Music Service continued to reach out to children and young people across the city during lockdown and instrumental lessons were delivered remotely from March 2020 until January 2021.

“When so much of normal life was disrupted, creativity and self-expression were more important than ever. The film captures authentic reflections on both challenges and successes of making music.

“It tells the story from the perspective of parents, schools, teachers and young musicians and is a celebration of learning, achievements, resilience and an honest reflection on what has been lost. What stands out is the value placed on music, how much it has been missed and the joy it brings.”

The film is part of the Our Creative Lockdown exhibition which can be viewed at Wolverhampton Art Gallery from this Saturday (16 October) to Sunday 21 November.

Councillor Dr Michael Hardacre, the City of Wolverhampton Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, said: “Members of the Music Service – both students and teachers – have continued to work tirelessly throughout the pandemic to explore their love of music, and this film is an excellent showcase of the sort of challenges they have faced over the last 18 months, and the successes they have achieved.”

Wolverhampton Music Service provides quality teaching for children and young people across the city, including the chance to perform with one of its 13 groups.
