An Erdington Primary school is looking for community minded volunteers, groups and businesses to help create an inviting outdoor space for pupils. Brookvale Primary School wants to turn an “uninspiring” outdoor area – including a disused allotment – into a colourful, vibrant learning environment where youngsters can develop both their play and education.

The school is seeking volunteers who can spare some time or unwanted goods, such as paint and plants, to help bring the creative space to life.

Jessica Hazleton, a higher level teaching assistant at Brookvale School, said: “We’re really keen to give children a captivating outdoor space where they can play and learn in a stimulating environment – magical corners that will inspire and fuel their imaginations. At the moment, the areas are in need of a refresh and we are really hoping that children, families and volunteers can help us to create several attractive and bright zones that the pupils can make real use of at break times and lunch.

“The children have some fantastic ideas of what they’d like to see– such as laminated outdoor books; blackboards; maps of the world and games painted on the floors; a musical wall made out of pots and pans; and colourful tyres to sit and play on.

Year 2 teacher Amanda said: “We’re looking ahead to spring and seeking people who could perhaps spare a few hours to help tidy, develop and maintain the allotment or to prepare and decorate areas. We’re also hoping for donations of any unwanted items such as tins of paint, compost, plants, bulbs, pots and planters. Not only will this teach children the value of teamwork, but it will provide them with a place they can nurture and take great pride in and where they too can bloom in all kinds of ways!”
