A talented young artist from Tottenham has been highly commended for his exceptional personal progression at the Mayor of London Adult Learning Awards.

Timothy Choi’s remarkable journey showcases the life-changing impact of education and creativity. The prestigious award ceremony which was held at City Hall honours individuals who have demonstrated remarkable growth through learning, overcoming significant barriers to achieve extraordinary outcomes in their personal lives, health, and well-being.

Born with cerebral palsy, Timothy faces significant physical challenges, including limited movement and the inability to speak. Yet, his journey is one of remarkable resilience, creativity, and personal development.

Thanks to the unwavering support of his mother and carers, Timothy has carved out a unique path, using art as a means of communication and self-expression. Throughout his journey, Timothy has benefited from the outstanding support provided by Haringey Council’s social care services, particularly as he transitioned from children’s to adult care.

He has also benefited from the dedicated support of his tutor Natasha from ‘Sweet Mind’ and live-in carer Eddie, both of whom have played a key role in helping Timothy thrive in a home-school environment by offering him their full, focused attention. Councillor Lucia das Neves, Cabinet Member for Health, Social Care, and Wellbeing said: “Timothy's story is a powerful reminder of the impact that art and education can have on individuals, regardless of their disability.

“His artistic achievements are the result of years of dedication, support, and personal growth. We are incredibly proud of all that Timothy has achieved and honoured to be part of his story.

“The support he has received from his carers, family, and us has been instrumental in his journey, showing that with the right resources, individuals can break down barriers and thrive.” Timothy’s mother, Chui Chui, said: “If I could describe Tim's paintings in three words, it would be: happy, colourful, and humorous.

“His art has a remarkable way of making people smile, recharging their energy, and offering a joyful perspective on life with kindness and respect. We feel extremely honoured to be highly commended for the ‘Mayor of London’s Adult Learning Award’.

“This award plays an important role in showcasing the achievements of individuals like Timothy, who inspire others to overcome their own challenges and reach their full potential. Thank you to everyone who played a role in his journey.”

From a young age, Timothy was introduced to art by his at-home carer, Angela, who nurtured his creativity through guided hand support. What began as therapeutic sessions evolved into a passionate artistic pursuit, resulting in a portfolio of over 100 paintings.

Timothy’s art has become a powerful means of self-expression and connection, boosting his confidence and leading to exhibitions at the London Parallax Art Fair and McQueens Theatre. The Mayor of London’s Adult Learning Awards play an essential role in showcasing the extraordinary achievements of individuals like Timothy, who inspire others to overcome their own challenges and reach their full potential.
