Birmingham residents are urged to be on the lookout for emails and letters from the council’s elections office over the next few weeks. As well as the usual forms that many people will be familiar with, some people will receive an email instead as part of a trial to reduce costs. Head of Electoral Services, Robert Connelly, said: “To ensure you get a vote in the next election please look out for correspondence from the Elections Office."
"Whether you receive a letter, an email or a visit, it’s important you follow the instructions and respond accordingly. Please help us by ensuring all those over the age of 16 are registered as well as those who have recently moved.
“You may have registered for the first time to vote in the May local elections or for the EU referendum in June and wonder why you’re being asked to register again. This isn’t the case – you are registered but we have a legal requirement to check each year that the Electoral Register is up to date and the ‘canvass’ as it’s known takes place every year, finishing in autumn.
Robert added: “However, if anyone knocks on your door claiming to be from the Elections Office, please ask for their ID.”
