UCL is celebrate Black History Month 2024 with an exhibition that features 100 portraits of African and Caribbean employees.
Marked with a range of activities throughout this month, a range of events, lectures and social gatherings organised across the UK, UCL is marking the month, which brings together the latest activities on campus and beyond. The Black experience is far from monolithic, and it must be ensured that all voices are amplified, recognised and importantly, celebrated.
Various events and activities are taking place at UCL throughout October in celebration of Black History Month. You can discover 100 portraits of African and Caribbean employees at UCL, celebrating heritage and contributions to the university.
Launched on the final day of Black History Month, this exhibition is a powerful reminder that the contributions of people of African and Caribbean heritage should be acknowledged, and celebrated, all year around. You can experience diversity through a fresh, intersectional perspective as UCL Libraries invites staff, students and community members to contribute to a curated list of essential book recommendations for Black History Month.
Whether it's a novel that illuminates untold stories or a powerful work of non-fiction, you can hear about the books that have made the most lasting of impacts. Within Higher Education, the ‘wicked problem’ of the racialised awarding gap still exists, with only 0.2% of professors in the UK being Black women.
Recent polling commissioned by UUK found that 25% of students from an ethnic background had experienced some form of racial harassment. Within the UCL community, they feel a collective responsibility for tackling racism and challenging harmful narratives about minoritised communities and look forward to celebrating Black History at UCL this month and beyond.
