Children return to school this week after a well enjoyed summer break, and with some students starting new schools, parents will need to familiarise themselves with parking restrictions.

North East Lincolnshire Council, and its delivery partner Equans, want to remind road users of the prohibition of stopping on yellow zig zag lines outside schools. Stopping on yellow zig zag lines is strictly prohibited during school peak times.

These times can differ depending on when each school starts and finishes, but there will be clear signage in place to inform drivers when the restrictions are in force. The restrictions are necessary to help safeguard children's lives by giving them a clear view of the road, and vehicles must not stop on them during the times stated.

There are no exemptions to this rule for any drivers. Currently, ten schools across the borough have CCTV cameras installed with the first launched outside Signhills Academy, Cleethorpes in September 2022, before expanding to Old Clee Primary Academy the following December.

From the scheme starting in September 2022 to July 2024, 1517 penalty charge notices have been issued by camera enforcement. Camera enforcement is another means which allows councils to enforce this restriction together with the Civil Enforcement Officers.

The aim is to ensure road users are adhering to the restrictions and to keep the children safe. Any vehicle which is observed to be stopped, even for a short period of time on the zig zags within the times specified may receive a Penalty Charge Notice.

The zig zags lines are nationally recognised and are an essential road safety measure there to safeguard children’s lives. The Road Safety team, Parking Services and local schools will work closely together, and hope to ensure the safety of all pupils going to and from school.
