Kajol is one of Bollywood’s most popular and enduring actresses.
She is the daughter of the veteran actress Tanuja, the niece of the iconic star Nutan, and the granddaughter of the yesteryear performer Shobna Samarth. Kajol is currently enjoying the success of her Netflix film, ‘Do Patti’ (2024).
Also starring Kriti Sanon in a dual role, the film offers a unique take on sisterhood and domestic violence. During a recent media interaction when promoting the film, Kriti was asked a question by a reporter.
The journalist asked her: “Do you think because you’re an outsider, and you don’t have the legacy or the cushion that Kajol has, do you think you can do the same as her?
“Take a break, take a backseat, and then come back?” Amused, Kriti replied: “I hope so!”
Kajol then interjected: “I don’t think it has anything to do with the legacy or a cushion. I’m sorry, but it depends on the woman.
“Nargis had no legacy before entering films. Sharmila Tagore had no legacy.
“What I have done today is not because of my lineage.” Kriti piped in: “I think it’s because of the legacy that you have created with your work.”
The ‘Baazigar’ actress agreed: “Exactly, and it’s the legacy of every woman who has worked as well.
“Every woman will be able to take a break and come back if she really wants to.” Kriti said: “I totally agree with that. I think Kajol’s work is the reason why she is still there.
“But also the fact that she is relevant. I think that is very important.
“You need to move with time, and you need to evolve. As long as you’re doing that, you will be able to come back and work whenever you want.”
The words of Kajol resonated with Reddit users. One of them said: “I mean, Kajol comes off as conceited in this interview, but she’s not wrong.
“Sridevi too did a comeback, and so has Rani Mukerji at some point. So it is about the work that you have done in the past.
“That being said, of course, having connections which are beyond the profession does help on some level.” Another person wrote: “Here, she wasn’t able to give her usual ‘being outsider’ lecture.
“I mean, I like her as an actress but it becomes jarring when one constantly talks about a topic and when she was given movies by maddock even after a series of duds. And I am happy she jumped back this year.”
During her career spanning over three decades, Kajol has appeared in classics including ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ (1995), ‘Ishq’ (1997), and ‘My Name is Khan’ (2010).
Do Patti marked her second collaboration with Kriti Sanon after ‘Dilwale’ in 2015.
