A Walsall College Health and Social Care student has secured a job as a Junior Care Assistant after his positive attitude while on a work experience placement, delighted bosses at The Shrubbery care home in Wednesbury.
The Shrubbery provides residential care for elderly people with mental health conditions, including dementia and Alzheimer’s.
As part of the Health and Social Care course, Level 3 student Brendan Flowers, 17, was required to complete 200 hours of work experience in a care setting. His placement at The Shrubbery involved supporting residents and making their stay as comfortable as possible, from talking to patients and taking part in various activities to helping staff serve meals.
Deputy Manager at The Shrubbery, Emma Furgusson said: “Brendan has a very kind hearted nature which is very admirable and no task he was given seemed like it was ever too much trouble for him. He even asked if he could come into work early to experience the shift changes between staff.
“His level of maturity seems beyond his years and we are delighted to have him on our team; he is a real asset to the home.”
Brendan commented: “Working at the care home while I am still studying means I am able to put the theory learnt in lessons into practice in real situations. Being offered a paid job is fantastic as it means I can continue to gain more experience, which will look great on my CV and university application.”
Jo Parton, Head of Curriculum for Health and Public Services at Walsall College commented: “Work experience is an integral part of students’ study programmes on the Health and Social Care course. It provides them with an insight into the industry and the skills and real life experience they need to pursue successful careers once they complete their studies with us.
“We are very proud of Brendan securing paid employment with the care home. He is a great example of how having the right attitude and working hard can be very rewarding.”
