Remembrance Sunday parades and services in Sandwell

Remembrance Sunday parades and services will be held in all of Sandwell’s six towns this November. Sandwell Council leader Councillor Steve Eling said the council was committed to supporting events to remember all those who gave their lives in the two world wars and subsequent conflicts. He said: “There have been concerns about Remembrance events being scaled back due to budget cuts, but they’re not under threat here in Sandwell.

 

“We have a parade and service in each of our six towns on Remembrance Sunday – as well as an evening Festival of Remembrance at West Bromwich Town Hall. “This year’s events will be especially poignant, with 2016 being the centenary of the Battle of the Somme. I hope local people will join with us to remember those lost and help make sure their sacrifices are never forgotten.”

 

Remembrance events are listed below (Sunday 13 November unless otherwise stated). Temporary road closures will be in place for the parades.

 

 

Deputy Mayor Councillor Susan Downing will be attending the service at the War Memorial in Oldbury Civic Square.

 

The parade meets at 10.30am at Low Town car park, with the service starting at around 10.50am.

 

 

 

Mayor Councillor Julie Webb and Sandwell Council chief executive Jan Britton will be attending the service at Powke Lane Cemetery.

 

A parade will start at 10.25am from Highgate Street car park, Old Hill, and make its way to the cemetery ready for the service starting at 10.50am. The parade then proceeds to Spring Meadow Social Club, Old Hill.

 

Deputy Lieutenant for the West Midlands Colonel Heidi Doughty will also be attending.

 

 

The parade starts at Smethwick Labour Club, Coopers Lane, at 10.35am, arriving at Smethwick War Memorial outside the Council House, High Street, at 10.45am ready for the service. The parade then returns to Smethwick Labour Club.

 

 

The parade forms at Tipton Sports and Social Club, Coneygre Road, at 10.15am, leaving at 10.40am to arrive at the War Memorial at Victoria Park for the service. Northfield Caledonia Pipes and Drums will lead the parade. The parade returns to the social club, which is providing refreshments.

 

 

 

The parade starts at Royal British Legion Wednesbury, Church Hill, at 10.15am, arriving at the War Memorial in Walsall Road in time for the service which starts just before 11am.

 

 

 

Dartmouth Park:

 

The parade meets at New Square (Car Park B – Primark) at 10.30am and starts at 10.40am promptly, proceeding along Reform Street over the A41 carriageway, turning right into Dartmouth Park main entrance to the war memorial for the service at 10.50am.

Any member of the Burma Star Association who is prepared to read out the Kohima Epitaph should make themselves known to the padre taking the service.

 

Great Barr: 

 

The scouts and guides will present a remembrance parade at St Margaret’s Church, Chapel Lane. The parade will meet at Junction 7 M6 at 10.15am and start at 10.40am, arriving at the church for 10.50am.

 

A morning service will be held at the church and the parade will then proceed to the Holiday Inn.

 

 

The Festival of Remembrance is at West Bromwich Town Hall, at 7.30pm on Sunday 13 November. Doors open at 6.30pm.

 

Attendees will include the Mayor and Deputy Mayor, The High Sheriff of the West Midlands, Dr Keith Bradshaw, Deputy Lieutenant of the West Midlands Stewart Towe and Lord Snape of Wednesbury.

 

Entrance is free.

 

Singing at the festival will be Boys' Brigade, Girls Venture Corps Air Cadets, Eaton Valley Primary School and Lyndon Flavell from West Bromwich Operatic Society. The 481 Air Cadets will be doing the guard of honour and taking the salute at start of festival.
