Responding to NHS England’s letter ‘Next steps in increasing capacity and operational resilience in urgent and emergency care ahead of winter’, Dr Adrian Boyle, Vice President of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine said: “We are pleased to see NHS England recognise the significant pressure that Urgent and Emergency Care is under and welcome the planning for winter, which we know will bring further severe pressures on a system already in crisis.

With temperatures rising yet again above 30 degrees in parts of the UK this week so has the need to check on and keep people living with dementia hydrated. 

Last month saw temperatures in the UK reach record-breaking levels. At the same time, an innovator supported by Alzheimer’s Society, saw sales and interest in his inventive hydration product ‘Jelly Drops’ soar.

People who eat when they are hungry tend to be more satisfied with their body and generally have higher self-esteem, a new international study suggests.

Published in the British Journal of Health Psychology, the study indicates that, contrary to popular ideas that it is important to ‘control’ hunger, paying attention to hunger and fullness cues appears to be linked to maintaining a lower weight.

From today (Thursday, August 11), Birmingham’s plasma donor centre is fully upgrading to new ‘female friendly’ donor machines which will almost double the number of women who can donate lifesaving plasma.

Up until now, the number of female donors has been severely restricted. The previous donation machines operated to minimum height and weight criteria that ruled most women out.

City of Wolverhampton Council has bid for £20million from the Government’s Levelling Up Fund Round 2 to drive forward the Bilston Health & Regeneration Programme. The Government announced in February 2022 that Wolverhampton and Sheffield would be the first of 20 cities to benefit from part of £1.5billion of Levelling Up funding for new infrastructure to be developed on brownfield land to boost housing and jobs.

A pop-up Covid-19 clinic will continue to be available at the Bilal Mosque on Newhampton Road West all next week, making it even easier for local residents to get their life-saving jabs. It is offering first, second and booster vaccinations from 10am-4pm every day until Sunday 14 August. Male and female vaccinators will be available on Monday (8 August).

Better Health and Disney have teamed up once more to help children in Wolverhampton get active throughout the summer holidays by playing free 10 Minute Shake Up games.

This year the games are inspired by favourite characters from Disney’s Encanto and Frozen, Disney and Pixar’s Lightyear, and Marvel’s The Avengers.

A group of 13 deaf young activists met at thestudio conference centre in Birmingham to attend intensive workshops and discuss their future campaigns.

The group, who hail from all over England, are members of the National Deaf Children’s Society’s ChangeMaker programme, which supports and mentors deaf young people to make improvements in their local communities.

Researchers at Birmingham City University have joined forces with Burton Albion Community Trust to help people struggling with long-Covid symptoms improve their health and regain their fitness.

Sports exercise scientists from the University have teamed up with fitness coaches from the English Football League One Club’s Community Trust to design, deliver and monitor the effectiveness of an exercise rehabilitation programme on long-Covid symptoms and recovery.
