Say goodbye to the classic witches, pumpkins and ghosts! A whopping 72% of the UK will reward trick or treaters with more sweets and chocolate for “better” costumes including pop culture costumes, memes and TV heroes, according to a survey released today from leading research company IvoryResearch.com

The study of 2000 UK adults investigated our Halloween traditions and beliefs in 2021.

On average, UK adults will open the door just nine times before giving up for the night with 43% admitting that they just leave a bucket of sweets outside their homes instead. It seems we’re still a few years behind the US when it comes to our love for the spooky season! In addition, 48% said that they don’t bother to purchase any sweets, chocolate or decorations and a further 62% don’t answer the door at all. The poll also found that 26% of UK adults are frightened on Halloween night and, ironically, 13% refuse to spend the night alone.

On the flip side, 19% declared that Halloween is their favourite annual celebration ahead of Christmas and Easter. In preparation for the big day, Brits spend over two hours planning and purchasing Halloween costumes with group costumes securing the top spot as the most difficult, taking a further one hour and 30 minutes to plan.

With the ever-growing influence of Instagram, 32% confessed to ‘Instagram likes’ being a factor in choosing their Halloween costumes and 26% only dress up to take pictures for social media. Surprisingly, 12% of Brits admitted that they are too superstitious to take part in any Halloween activities and a further 14% have never celebrated Halloween in their life.

Maria Ovdii, Co-Founder of Ivory Research, says: “Our research shows that Brits are somewhat divided when it comes to celebrating Halloween. While many of us enjoy the spooky season, dressing up and handing out treats, many of us are still sceptics staying home with the doors closed!”
