A host of community causes have already received a funding boost from Haringey Council’s new ward budget scheme, just six months after it launched. Each of the borough’s wards have been allocated £10,000 to spend on neighbourhood projects under the programme, which launched in July – with local people putting forward ideas on what it should fund.
A range of schemes have so far benefitted, from a project to tackle health issues by encouraging more people to register with their local GP, to a winter carnival parade, complete with floats and festive costumes, through the streets of Tottenham. Ward budget funding was also used to add some yuletide sparkle to Green Lanes, as part of the area’s Christmas lights switch on.
Cllr Bernice Vanier, Haringey Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities, said:
I’m pleased to see ward budgets proving popular already and funding events and projects which have had a positive impact on the community.
“Ward budgets mean that local people take the lead when it comes to making their neighbourhoods even better places to live, work and visit.
If you are thinking about organising an event or project that will boost your neighbourhood then this money could really help you get your idea off the ground.”
Under the scheme residents, community groups, charities and businesses are invited to make proposals before ward councillors agree together which submissions should be recommended for funding. Ward councillors work together to agree criteria, objectives and timescales for their wards.
