New figures published in Haringey’s Annual Carbon report have shown per capita carbon emissions in the borough have fallen by 37% since 2005. The figures mean Haringey now has a lower carbon footprint (770.4 kt CO2) than six neighbouring boroughs: Camden: 1,355.8 kt CO2, Barnet: 1,125.5 kt CO2, Enfield: 1,108.1 kt CO2, Islington: 876.9 kt CO2, Hackney: 812.1 kt CO2, & Waltham Forest – 775.2 kt CO2.
Joe Goldberg, Haringey’s Cabinet Member for Economic Development, Social Inclusion and Sustainability said, “These new figures show carbon emissions in Haringey have fallen significantly and we are on track to be a zero carbon borough by 2050. The fall is thanks to innovative projects like Smart Homes and Smart Business. Smart Homes has funded energy saving home improvements for over 300 households and created 65 new jobs since 2014 and energy efficiency grants from our Smart Business project have saved firms hundreds of pounds a year.
‘These award winning projects, have delivered significant cuts in emissions alongside our work to raise public awareness of carbon reduction schemes. Although our local action has delivered a step change, national measures have supported our work. The UK has switched off carbon emitting coal power stations and has increased the amount of renewable energy generated in the UK to record levels delivering national energy security and carbon reduction. Together these national and local measures have helped Haringey move one step closer to our 40% carbon reduction target.”
