India’s Kolkata looks set to discontinue its iconic trams, which have been running since 1873.

The 150-year-old trams system will be discontinued by the West Bengal government. Over the past few decades, lack of investment, inadequate maintenance and a sharp fall in passengers have led to a decline in their status.

West Bengal’s transport minister, Snehasis Chakraborty, told local media that the move will ease the city’s traffic congestion. But now, activists and tram lovers are protesting against this, arguing that trams are environment-friendly and an important part of the city’s heritage.

The heritage stretch - from Maidan to Esplanade - a popular route known for its picturesque views of Victoria Memorial and lush greenery, will continue to operate as a nod to the city’s rich history.
