Jamaica will be sending a four-man bobsleigh team to the Winter Olympics for the first time since 1998.

They will be representing the Caribbean island at the 2022 Beijing Games after Team Jamaica confirmed on Twitter a place at the games this year was secured.

In shades of the iconic 1993 Disney film Cool Runnings, the team wrote: "Jamaica, we have a bobsled team heading to Beijing.

"It will be fire on ice as #TeamJamaica secured their spot at the 2022 Beijing #WinterOlympics. This will be the first time Jamaica has qualified in three Olympic bobsled events. These events are the four-man, two-man and women's monobob."

It's the first time in 24 years that a full Jamaican team will take to the ice, after they were confirmed in the final spot in the 28-sled field. They also managed to qualify in the two-man and women's monobob events. It’s the first time ever that the country will have three representatives at any one Winter Olympic Games.

Cool Runnings was inspired by the real-life qualification the Jamaicans managed for the 1988 Olympics in Alberta, Canada, when fans around the world were captivated by the surprise of a nation from a tropical climate competing against countries with much stronger winter sports experience.

This year’s Games begins in Beijing on February 4 with the appearance of the Jamaicans set to be one of the most highly-anticipated moments of the 16 days’ worth of winter sports.

The four-man squad, led by Dudley Stokes, qualified for four successive Winter Olympics between 1988 and 1998, and managed a best result of 14th in Lillehammer in 1994. That year the Jamaicans finishes ahead of the likes of France, Switzerland and the United States.

Team Jamaica will also have their first ever alpine skier representing them in Beijing. Former DJ, Benjamin Alexander, became the first Jamaica skier to qualify for the Winter Olympics in the giant shalom.
