St Kitts and Nevis are celebrating the 40th anniversary of independence from the British Empire today.
Taking place a few days after National Heroes' Day, under the St Kitts and Nevis Labour Party Administration in St Kitts and the Concerned Citizens Movement in Nevis, the country’s leaders have been gearing up for today’s significant celebration.
In this regard, the St Kitts and Nevis (SKN) Independence 40 Committee Day’s celebrations begins with a concert the night before with the main celebrations to take place in the capitals of Basseterre and Charlestown, where Community Festivals will be taking place over two days. Under the theme of ‘Growing Sustainably, Developing Maturely, Building Resiliency: Independence 40’, a public holiday on the islands, the streets will be filled with a Carnival atmosphere, with music, Calypso and Soca shows, as well as parades of dancers in colourful costumes.
Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew said: “Our nation is much closer to true independence than not. As we mark 40 years as an independent nation, we also set our eyes on transitioning into a republic. We trod on towards that goal.
“That goal of self-determination and self-actualisation where we truly encapsulate our sovereignty.” As the two-island nation - known for its vibrant culture, beautiful beaches, and lush landscapes - marks its ‘40th’, this significant milestone marks the country’s journey from being a British colony to becoming a sovereign state and is a time for reflection and celebration.
