From film screenings to workshops, there are so many ways to get involved as the University of Birmingham geared up to celebrate Black History Month with a range of different events and activities throughout the month.
With Black History Month fully up and running, the University of Birmingham is commemorating the occasion as it is shining a light on Black stories and celebrates Black heritage. This, therefore, has inspired their events programme for October.
The activities for Black History Month have been put together by departments and individuals from across the university, the staff and the Race Equality Network - which includes education workshops and film showings. Movies being shown include ‘Hidden Figures’, ‘Blackkklansman’, ‘Blue Story’ and ‘Daughters of the Dust’.
Students can also attend talks such as ‘Black Excellence in Tech – The Power of Narrative’ and ‘Celebrating Black in Birmingham Biosciences’. There will also be a number of independent events hosted throughout the city too.
These include musical performances, talks on fostering, a poetry jam, and a comedy show by Mo Gilligan, which are all taking part throughout the rest of 2024. Black History Month is an important feature of the Birmingham City Council’s annual festivals and events programme, managed by the Cultural Development Service.
Birmingham City Council has been supporting Black History Month since the mid-1990s, making it a significant part of the city’s event calendar. The university has chosen the late acclaimed poet Benjamin Zephaniah to be their image for this year’s Black History Month.
The Birmingham legend was also recently honoured by fellow Birmingham City University with a recent writing competition that was launched in his name.
