Lawmakers in the US have announced that a bill has been introduced in the House of Representatives to declare Diwali a federal holiday.

The landmark legislation is co-sponsored by a number of lawmakers, including Indo-American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi. Led by New York Congressman Carolyn B Maloney, the festival of lights was supported by The House Foreign Affairs Committee will support, defend and advance on the bill.

 

“Diwali this year symbolises the nation’s continued journey out of the darkness of COVID-19, Maloney said. “I am very, very happy and delighted to present the Deepavali Day Act this week alongside members of the Congressional Indian Caucus, which will mark Diwali as a federal holiday.

Congressman Krishnamoorthi added: “Celebrations like Diwali speak to the heart of what we all wish our nation to be a beacon of happiness, healing, learning and light and uncertain times.

“My colleagues, the leaders of the Indo-American community and I believe there is no better time to dedicate Diwali as a federal holiday than as a result of this terrible and grim pandemic.” He also presented a resolution to the US Congress recognizing the religious and historical importance of Diwali.

“It is truly fitting that Diwali this year symbolizes our nation’s continued journey out of the darkness of COVID-19 and the terrible effects Democrats depended on the people of our nation,” Congresswoman Maloney added.

Powerful Congressman Gregory Meeks, chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, backed the legislation, saying: “This is something that should be shared with all of us in American society. It’s a good day, because we are talking about light on darkness. And that’s what it is.”
