Birmingham Health, Safety and Environment (BHSEA) Members tasted success at an Awards Ceremony held earlier this month at Walsall Football Club.

As a West Midlands member-based charity association, run by volunteers, BHSEA exists to support, expand the knowledge, and enhance connections for those who work in or who are responsible for health, safety, and environment in their workplace. The Awards programme, introduced for the first time to BHSEA members this year, is designed to showcase, celebrate, and acknowledge the much-valued contributions and success of individual members in five different award categories.

Four of the awards were considered and decided upon by BHSEA’s Trustees, and one of the awards was voted for exclusively by BHSEA members, in an online poll. Louise Mansfield, Legal Director of Bevan Brittan, based in Birmingham was the only member to receive two awards at the ceremony.

Louise took home the Chair’s Special Recognition Award for her dedication in raising the profile of BHSEA and her extensive support for members events. Louise was also awarded the High Five Award, voted for by members, alongside Andy Lucas from Coventry based Bespoke Safety, for jointly organising and delivering a Mock Trial event in May 2023. The Mock Trial was chosen by members as the most impactful and effective BHSEA event held in the last year.

John Frazer, Health, and Safety Manager for The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust received the Membership Recognition Award which recognised that he had, during the last 12 months, generated the greatest number of membership referrals, ensuring that the association continued to grow and attract new members. The Membership Spotlight Award, which recognises the most engaged member of the year through attending events, social media interaction, survey participation and a host of other criteria, was awarded to Tony Kempton, Health, Safety and Environmental Manager at ARH Group, based in Shrewsbury.

The final award was presented to John Sneath, Health & Safety Training Adviser for SATS (Site Assessment & Training Services) based in Dudley. John received the Construction Special Achievement Award for his significant support and engagement in the past year for the Association’s Construction forums and events.

BHSEA Chair, Wayne Bishop said: “These awards are our way of saying thank you, and to recognise and celebrate the incredible work and support that our members give.

“Our volunteers and members continue to ensure that BHSEA thrives by delivering high quality events, effective training, networking and CPD opportunities to support the Health, Safety and Environmental sector within the West Midlands. I am honoured to present these awards in 2023, my inaugural year as Chair and also the first year of the BHSEA awards.

“Despite the challenging economic conditions for many, the remarkable resilience demonstrated by the BHSEA members serves as a testament to the unwavering commitment, hard work, and dedication for the protection of people and safeguarding of businesses.”
