Meet Louise Thompson, an African American woman from Fairbanks, Alaska who was born in 1914 before World War I and once catered for President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s family.
She recently celebrated her remarkable 110th birthday surrounded by loved ones. Throughout her life, Thompson has seen 19 U.S. presidents come and go.
One of her memorable moments was catering for President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s family, where his son, Elliot, would often visit for her famous baked goods. Beyond her renowned baking skills, Thompson has been a pillar of support in her community.
Her daughter, Diane Leavy, recalls her active involvement in church activities, teaching Sunday School, and initiating exercise classes at the Senior Centre in Poughkeepsie. “My mom went around, knocked on doors, and told them we needed to come do exercises,” Leavy said.
“She said, we’re old but we’re not dead.” Thompson’s exercise classes not only kept seniors fit but also fostered enduring friendships.
Moreover, she credits her longevity to faith, staying active, and enjoying a slice of chocolate cake now and then.
