200 rescuers in Austria are working on Christmas day and possibly through the entire night to find 10 missing skiers.

The Western Austrian ski resort region in Lech and Zürs is known as the most spectacular area in the Alps. “The name stands for passion.” the visitors’ website said. Arlberg is known as the cradle of skying.

300 km of well-marked slopes, 130km categorized as easy, 121km as a medium, and 51 km as difficult, Lech and Zürs in Arlberg have it all. Christmas is seen as the top of the tourist high season, with all hotels booked and ski slopes busy.

Christmas 2022 will also be remembered as a day of awareness of the danger of avalanches. Rescue teams managed to find 8 out of 10 missing skiers after searching for them well into the night.

200 or more mountain rescue workers were initially searching for the ten people feared trapped under the snow. The avalanche occurred at around 15:00 CET on the 2,700-metre-high Trittkopf mountain between Zuers and Lech am Arlberg, and the cascading snow reached as far as nearby ski trails.

Christmas weather was warm for the season, after snowing all week. Avalanches in Austria caused death to tourists every year.
