One of the highlights of this year’s Black History Month sees written and directed Mervyn Weir’s highly acclaimed ‘Jamaica Love’ receiving two nominations from the Black British Theatre Awards 2024.

The stage play ‘Jamaica Love’ - a musical journey through Jamaica’s colonial history and the Caribbean diaspora experience in Britain since 1948 – received nominations for the Best Musical Production category for the awards ceremony, which is set to take place at the Lyceum Theatre, on Covent Garden in London’s West End, on November 4.

Weir, who is also the author of ‘I Can’t Breathe’, a literary and visual work that reflects on the murder of George Floyd and the systemic pattern of racism for which he received a Pioneer Award in 2020 for its film version, said: “I received the official announcement that ‘Jamaica Love’ has two nominations from the Black British Theatre Awards for Best Musical Production and Best Musical Director for Celia Wickham-Anderson.”

“I feel Blessed and deeply thankful for and appreciative of all who have supported me for the success of the production. It is they who have made ‘Jamaica Love’ what it is.” After sold-out shows last year, including at the Trafalgar Theatre, ‘Jamaica Love’ has made a second UK tour at Alexandra Palace and The Grove Theatre. And now, further performances are set to take place at Beck Theatre on October 26 and Ashcroft Theatre on November 2.

For Mervyn, whose career highlights include receiving an award for his writing from famed author James Baldwin and reciting his poem in the presence of Maya Angelou, the nominations are a birthday present he will never forget.

The final two performances of the produced Krik Krak ‘Jamaica Love’ for the year is set to take place later during this Black History Month - on October 26 - at Beck Theatre.
