Sandwell residents are urged to look out for a form in the post to check they’re registered to vote in elections and referendums. The council’s elections team has sent forms to every household in Sandwell. The council has to do this by law – and all people need to do is confirm the details for their household are correct or update them. This can easily be done online, by phone, by text or by post – just follow the instructions on the form.

Young people aged 16 and 17 are also encouraged to register now – ready for when they turn 18 and become eligible to vote.Councillor Steve Trow, Sandwell Council’s cabinet member for core council services, said: “It’s really important to check you are registered to vote so your voice is heard.  “Next year will see the first election for a ‘metro mayor’ for the West Midlands. If you’re not registered to vote, you won’t be able to vote in that or any other election or referendum.

“Don’t lose your right to vote – and remember that not being registered can also affect your credit rating.

“Look out for the form in the post. There are lots of quick and easy ways to respond. Please reply online, by freephone or by text if you can as this will save time for everyone.

“I would also ask you to respond as soon as you can after receiving the form. This will save us time and money by not having to send reminders and chase up responses.

“Young people aged 16 and 17 may not be able to vote, but they can also get registered now. Nearly 400 students aged 16 and 18 registered earlier this year, following the election team’s work with schools and colleges.”
