People across the city are being urged to make sure they are registered to vote in May’s local elections. Individuals who fail to register to vote will be unable to have their say at in the local and police and crime commissioner elections, which will be held on 5 May 2016.Also, residents of Sutton Coldfield could miss their chance to vote for their new town councillors.
Registration forms containing current details of people listed on the electoral register were sent to all Birmingham households last September, following the introduction of individual electoral registration.
However, anyone still not registered to vote can do so online by visiting www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.
Anyone not included on the electoral register not only loses their vote but may also have difficulty getting credit, making it difficult to get a mortgage or even a phone contract in future.
Robert Connelly, Head of Electoral Services at Birmingham City Council, said: “Anyone who is not registered will be unable to vote in the local or Police and Crime Commissioner elections, or be able to have their say in the proposed EU referendum.
“I would urge anyone who has yet to register to vote to do so as soon as possible. It is both quick and simple – visit www.gov.uk/register-to-vote and enter your details.”
