Three leading international journalists will discuss how to transform European media to ensure equality, especially for women of colour, during an online discussion organised by the Sir Lenny Henry Centre for Media Diversity at Birmingham City University.
Sabika Shah Povia (Reuters, La Reppublica), and Riem Higazi (Austrian Broadcasting Corporation) and Djarah Kan (L’Espresso) will join K Biswas (New Statesman, New York Times, Resonance FM) - critic and editor of Representology for the hour-long exchange.
The Developing a new agenda - international reporting by women of colour panel will see all four journalists share their experiences of working in European media, point towards how to transform the industry, and explore marginality as a space for resistance. Representology is a journal dedicated to research and best-practice perspectives on how to make the media more representative of all sections of society.
K Biswas said: "Following the publication of Representology Issue Four earlier this year, I'm delighted to host this conversation exploring intersectionality in European journalism. Too often, there's been a gulf between news coverage and people's everyday lives - Sabika, Djarah, and Riem have a wealth of knowledge on how to close this gap and create a media that better reflects diverse audiences."
The event is open to members of the public and media and will include a Q&A session. The Sir Lenny Henry Centre for Media Diversity, based at Birmingham City University, is an independent research body working to promote accurate representation of all sections of society across contemporary UK media.
