A local hero, who channeled his grief and anger of his brother-in-law’s murder into improving the lives of thousands of youngsters on the city’s streets, is soon set to receive the British Citizen Award. Mohammed Zafran, a community activist from Small Heath, is one of a small number of people who have been invited to the Palace of West Minister to be awarded the medal.
The father-of-two was motivated into reaching out to youngsters after his brother-in-law Sarfraz Khan, 23, was fatally stabbed in Larches Green Park, Sparkbrook, in March 2010.
Having founded the All 4 Youth and Community organisation, which provides youth the opportunity to get back into education via sporting initiatives, Zaf’s tireless and inspirational work has allowed him to make a positive impact on more than 13,000 young people across the Midlands region.
Set to receive his award at the Presentation Ceremony on January 28, this is not the first time Zaf has been recognised on a national level.
Recognised in the Queen’s Honours list in 2015, Zaf was awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) after being nominated for setting up All 4 Youth And Community and other initiatives in Birmingham by Prime Minister David Cameron.
The People’s Honours recognises individuals from all over the country who have done extraordinary things in their local communities, each one of whom have committed generous, uplifting and selfless acts of kindness in order to improve the lives of others in their communities.
