According to a newly released major economic report, Birmingham is said to be on the precipice of exciting opportunities for economic growth - despite the impacts of Covid-19 and Brexit.

The Birmingham Economic Review, published by Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce (GBCC) and the University of Birmingham’s City-REDI, reveals promising signs for recovery across the city-region even though well-documented challenges such as talent shortages and inequality remain.

In his Budget speech, Chancellor Rishi Sunak said that the UK's spending watchdog expects the economy will return to its pre-Covid level at the turn of the year. The Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) has lifted its prediction for economic growth in 2021 to 6.5%, up from its previous forecast of 4%. It has also reduced its estimate of the long-term effect of Covid-19 on the economy from 3% to 2%.

Work is set to start within weeks on the Binley Cycleway in Coventry following confirmation of £8.6 million funding. City of Wolverhampton Council is to consult with the public on a proposal to make the current temporary 30mph speed limit on the city’s Ring Road permanent. The council believes that the change will keep people safer by reducing accidents and improve the environment by reducing harmful emissions and encouraging more people to walk and cycle.

The 30mph speed limit along the entire length of the Ring Road was implemented in June 2020 on a trial basis when councils were encouraged by the Government to implement transport schemes which promoted social distancing.

Global cyber security firm CSS Assure is joining legal and professional services group Ampa – which has a presence in Birmingham - projected to add more than £7m to the group’s turnover over the next three years.

The addition, which marks the first non-legal service provider to join since the launch of Ampa’s ‘house of brands’ strategy, will see CSS Assure continue to trade under its existing brand across the UK and internationally.
