Haringey residents who are over 65 have been urged to visit the gym for free. Older residents can use are able to use gyms (at Park Road, Tottenham Green and Broadwater Farm) for free in Haringey on weekdays between 9am-5pm. Free gym access is one of a number of initiatives that Haringey Council has Introduced to make Haringey a healthier place and increase the number of older residents involved in leisure activities. The free gym scheme for over 65s follows the completion of £15 million improvements across Haringey’s leisure centres, led by the council’s partner and leisure provider Fusion. Improvement works including new studios, a complete overhaul of changing areas, gym expansion and the upgrade of Park Road Lido.

The call for more older residents to use the free gym scheme comes as Haringey supports the launch of a national ‘One You’ campaign next week which brings together information, support and advice on healthy living.

Haringey Council is pressing ahead with its Obesity Alliance which encourages partners and businesses to come up with ideas for creating a healthier environment. Recent initiatives have included the launch of Public Health England’s new Sugar Smart app at Stamford Hill Primary School, which helps parents find out how much sugar is in food and drinks; and Tottenham Hotspur Foundation’s ‘Shape Up With Spurs’ project which offers Haringey residents of all ages and abilities the chance to benefit from free twice-weekly fitness sessions and expert nutritional advice.

Haringey Council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, Cllr Peter Morton said:

“We are making Haringey borough where healthier lifestyles is the natural choice and there is no better example of offering over 65s free access. I would urge everyone to take up this offer, from pumping weights to yoga classes, from aerobics to swimming. With the investment in Haringey’s leisure centres now complete there is no better time."

All older people need to do to take up the offer is turn up at leisure centre with their ID (birth certificate, passport, driving licence or freedom pass).
