Training is being offered to organisations and individuals who may come into contact with someone at risk of suicide as part of a range of activities taking place in Wolverhampton around World Suicide Prevention Day. Delivered by PAPYRUS, a charity which aims to prevent suicide among young people, the 90-minute sessions will be held on Tuesday (6 September, 2016) at 10.30am and 2pm and will explore beliefs and ideas relating to suicide.

Councillor Paul Sweet, the City of Wolverhampton Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health and Wellbeing, said: “We are committed to promoting mental health and wellbeing across the city and have invited PAPYRUS to put on a session for individuals and organisations which come into contact with others who may be at risk of suicide.”

Places are limited and must be booked in advance. For more information, please call 01902 555109 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

The training is part of a week-long series of activities taking place in Wolverhampton in the run up to World Suicide Prevention Day on Saturday 10 September. The activities aim to seek to break the taboo around mental health, get people thinking about their own mental health and wellbeing and that of others, and highlight the help and support which is available locally.

Events include drop-in information sessions at the Epic Café Health and Wellbeing Hub on Lichfield Street on Monday 5 September and Thursday 8 September from 10.30am-12.30pm and 3pm-5pm on both days, and at the Tiranga South Asian arts festival at Bob Jones Community Hub next Sunday 11 September.

Meanwhile, Wolverhampton Healthy Minds will be offering free emotional wellbeing checks at Phoenix Health Centre from Monday-Thursday, 5-8 September, between 8.30am and 10am, at the City of Wolverhampton College’s Wellington Road campus on Wednesday 7 September from 10am-1pm and at Bilston Health Centre on Friday 9 September from 10.30am-noon.

Dudley Mind’s Jolly Joggers will be meeting at West Park this Saturday 3 September at 10.15am, while a special Walking for Health session will take place at West Park on Wednesday 7 September at 10am. Customers at Epic Café and the Civic Centre’s café will receive leaflets setting out Five Ways to Wellbeing throughout the week.

Meanwhile, individuals are encouraged to Go Orange on Wednesday 7 September and wear something orange to show their support for the campaign. Orange and yellow ribbons will be on sale at the Civic Centre and Epic Café to raise money for PAPYRUS.
