Birmingham City Council has announced the second set of transport schemes to be developed and delivered from its new Local Improvement Budget. The Local Improvement Budget was approved by the Council’s Cabinet in December last year.

Responding to local safety and accessibility concerns raised by local residents and councillors, a further 9 projects will be delivered including a ‘Dropped Kerbs for Mothers Access Pilot’ in the Sutton Vesey ward to help young families with prams and pushchairs better access local facilities in a safe and sustainable way. The other newly announced schemes in wards across the city comprise:

  • Traffic Calming on Wyndhurst Road in Glebe Farm and Tile Cross
  • Traffic Calming on Camp Lane in Handsworth Wood
  • A new pedestrian crossing facility on Alvechurch Road in Longbridge and West Heath
  • New Traffic Regulation Orders and One Way System in the vicinity of Nursery Road in Harborne
  • New Traffic Regulation Orders and One Way System on roads in Holyhead
  • Traffic Calming on Pineapple Road in Stirchley
  • Closure of a layby that attracts littering and anti-social behaviour on the A38 in Minworth
  • Highway measures to improve road safety and access in Oscott

Birmingham City Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment, Councillor Waseem Zaffar said: "Following on from our first set of projects announced in February, I am really pleased that we are now able to confirm funding for a second set of schemes from the Local Improvement Budget, which demonstrates our ongoing commitment to address road safety and accessibility concerns raised by local communities and councillors.

“These projects will be developed for implementation during the 2022/23 financial year and will continue to support our active travel priorities set out in the Birmingham Transport Plan."

Designed to tackle local transport issues at ward level, the Local Improvement Budget will enable the Council to deliver transport and highways improvements with a total of £1m of capital funding provided on top of existing road safety, safer routes and ward minor measures programmes.
