Public Services students were invited by West Midlands Police to help with their riot training over the summer break and were also given a rare insight into the force’s training and riot tactics. Over 15 Level 3 students became disorderly football hooligans for the day, cheering and chanting at the police in a disruptive manner during a series of stimulated riot activities at Birmingham City Football ground.
Students put the police officers through their paces as they experienced what they might one day have to deal with. The officers, in full riot gear tried various tactics to try to subdue troublesome crowds including removing disruptive supporters from the stands and herding groups to clear areas to create safe zones.
Public Services Lecturer, Jo Hughes said: “Many of the students hope to join the uniformed services after completing their studies so this was an excellent opportunity for all involved. The students are now looking forward to helping the police with their public order training later in the year.”
Student, Macalan Eden commented: “Taking part in this training has made me appreciate all the hard work and discipline that is required to become a riot control police officer. It was a fantastic experience but it did feel a bit strange at first having to shout at the police.”
